EU parliament decides on online gambling legislation

Last Tuesday the European parliament voted against creating a single European market for online gambling. Instead member states make their own legislation which providers must follow. The idea got 544 votes against 36 and 66 non-voters. At the moment there are 3 million active gamblers on the internet in Europe alone. The parliament also argued about the dangers of online gambling and gave a few propositions.

For instance the parliament argued that legislators, providers and organizers of gambling competitions should work together. According to the parliament this creates a code of conduct which will help regulate the gambling industry, this code is not to be mistaken with legislation. The parliament also argued about the advertising of online gambling sites and have also pleaded for a standard minimum age to access gambling sites and a standard monthly maximum gambling amount, or pre-paid cards.

The IMCO (Internal Market and Consumer Protection) created a report which states that gambling is an economic activity which should fall under the same legislation, in order to keep freedom of service to developers. Also the report noted that myths about online gambling like addiction have never been proven. There will be no new short term legislations because of this decision.
