Date set for Kentucky appeal
The long-running Kentucky vs. online gambling dispute over an attempt to seize international domains will again rear its ugly head on October 22nd 2009 as Governor Steve Beshear attempts to justify his actions before the Kentucky Supreme Court.
Long story short, the latest litigation is an attempt to reverse a Kentucky Court of Appeals decision that the state overreached its authority in attempting to seize 141 international domains of online gambling companies that were not even located within its borders. The action was widely seen as commercial protectionism and ignited fierce reactions from Internet freedom bodies and civil society.
The Supreme Court has scheduled oral arguments of 15 minutes for each side after considering voluminous briefs from previous hearings.
The Interactive Gaming Council and the Interactive Media Entertainment & Gaming Association (iMEGA) continue to challenge the state’s outsourced legal representatives on the issue.
